Discovering New Physics in an Ultrafast Laser
We are looking for a curious and motivated student to investigate complex dynamics in a Mamyshev oscillator—an ultrafast fibre laser that may reproduce a phenomenon never experimentally demonstrated in any physical system: a heterodimensional cycle. This unusual behaviour links states with different numbers of unstable directions and connects laser physics with ideas from fluid dynamics, turbulence, and weather predictability.
No previous knowledge of ultrafast optics is required; a basic background in electromagnetics and a willingness to learn are sufficient. During the project, the student will gain experience in numerical simulations, nonlinear dynamics, laser physics, and scientific computing, with the possibility of contributing to a genuinely novel experimental discovery.
